The Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics

Every four years, the city of Amalfi hosts the Regatta of the Maritime Republics. The event, established in 1955 with the aim to recall the companies and the rivalry of the best known Italian maritime republics, involves the Italian cities of Pisa, Venice and Genoa, in other words the other maritime cities that for centuries competed for the supremacy over the Mediterranean Sea with Amalfi.
The historical event takes place every year on a day between the end of May and the beginning of July, and is hosted in turn from among these cities, for the 2016 edition, the city to host the regatta will Amalfi, on the Amalfi Coast. Historical Regatta is usually preceded by a parade, during which through the streets of the host city some figures step into the shoes of ancient characters that characterized each republic. With the parade every Marine Republic lives again its glorious past, offering episodes and characters that marked history.
The race, however, is the key moment of the whole event.
4 crews take part in in the competition, each consisting of eight rowers and a coxswain, and some reserves. The ancient race takes place on a path along two kilometers, and differs depending on the location: in Amalfi along the coast in the Tyrrhenian Sea, in Genoa in the Ligurian Sea in the port basin, in the river Arno in Pisa and in the lagoon at Venice.
The winner of the race receives a gold and silver trophy, made by Scuola Orafa Fiorentina, which holds for a year, until the next edition.
